Day 1: Sunnyvale to Mt. Shasta

307 miles

The first day is the hardest. After six hours of INTENSE packing and other preparation—like cleaning the refrigerator—we drove five hours to Mt. Shasta. The temp peaked at 105 at six pm in Redding. But car was comfortable—66 degrees on Dan's side, 72 on mine—as we pushed along at 80 mph, and mileage was as much as 28 mpg! What a car! What a driver!

The Best western Tree House Inn in Mt. Shasta is one of the best Best Western hotels in the country. We have been staying there annually for more than twenty years. The maintenance is always excellent and every year something has been upgraded. This year there is a new mural, depicting a salmon taking the fly, in the pool area. The pool is fabulous—very large, and a pleasant temperature. I enjoyed watching the family groups playing. Dan passed on the swim, but he enjoyed an excellent light dinner of vegetable soup with slices of grilled chicken on the side, and he had fun talking to the locals in the lounge.
